Trace

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 19, 2026

Your routes belong to you. Trace processes your projects on your device, with no user account, advertising, or built-in tracking.

Who we are

Trace, also known as Trace Studio, is published by La Compagnie des Internets Bordelaise, a French SAS registered under SIREN 934 021 403, based in Bordeaux, France. See our legal information and support page.

This policy covers Trace for Mac and iPhone. Available features differ by platform.

Your files

Trace reads the GPX files and media you choose to open. GPX files can contain geographic coordinates, elevations, timestamps, and names. Projects, photos, subtitles, imported fonts, and exports are processed locally. The application does not upload these files to us, and we do not operate a backend that hosts them.

On Mac, projects and exports are saved where you choose. On iPhone, the current editing session is not restored after restarting the app; exported videos are saved or shared to the destination you select. The included iPhone demo trail is bundled with the app and works offline. Preferences and downloaded map caches are stored locally. If you save files in a cloud-synced folder or share an export, that service handles the files under its own terms.

Map downloads

Trace connects to map providers to download terrain, imagery, place names, and buildings. Depending on the selected map, region, and features, these providers include Apple Maps through MapKit, AWS Terrain Tiles, IGN, swisstopo, USGS, EOX, and the Overpass service for OpenStreetMap data.

Requests contain tile coordinates or geographic query areas and connection information such as your public IP address. A query can reveal the region you are viewing. Trace does not send providers your complete GPX file, route name, photos, or exported video.

Providers may keep service logs according to their own policies; we do not control their retention periods. Apple manages MapKit networking. Trace’s other HTTP download sessions do not accept or retain cookies or use shared credential storage. Trace does not attach an advertising ID or persistent installation ID.

Provider information: Apple, AWS, IGN, swisstopo, USGS, EOX, and Overpass.

Tracking and purchases

Trace has no advertising, behavioral analytics, tracking SDK, or developer-operated data-collection backend. System APIs used for preferences, animation timing, and cache timestamps are not used for fingerprinting.

Apple processes Mac App Store purchases. Trace does not receive your payment card details. Apple’s store and system diagnostics are governed by your Apple settings and Apple’s policies.

This website and support

These pages contain no publisher-added analytics, advertising, data-collection forms, or remotely loaded fonts. Hosting providers may process connection information to serve and secure the site. A private preview may require authentication handled by the hosting platform.

If you contact us, we use the information you provide to answer and follow up on your request. Please do not send private routes or personal media unless they are needed. Handling your request enables us to provide support; keeping the site secure serves our legitimate interest in protecting the service.

Retention and deletion

Your projects and exports remain in their chosen locations until you delete them. Delete them in Finder on Mac or Files and the selected export destination on iPhone and manage any synced copies or backups with the relevant storage provider. Map caches may be downloaded again. Uninstalling the app may leave documents and support files on your Mac. You can request guidance on removing remaining local data.

Support correspondence is kept only as long as needed to resolve and follow up on the request, subject to applicable legal retention requirements. Map and hosting providers manage their own technical logs.

Your rights

Where we process personal data about you, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or portability, and object to processing, as applicable. See Support to contact the publisher. For data held independently by map or storage providers, contact the relevant provider. You may also lodge a complaint with the French data protection authority, the CNIL.

We may update this policy as Trace changes. The date above identifies the current version.
